History

Titanic struck an iceberg at 11:40 pm on 14 April 1912 and sank at 2:20 am on the 15th. Wireless reports reached New York through the day, confused and contradictory; early editions of some papers said the ship was being towed to Halifax. By the morning of the 16th the Carpathia had confirmed the loss and the Tribune, like every paper in the city, led with the figures as then understood, which were later revised to about 1,500 dead and 705 saved.

The Tribune was one of New York's older dailies, founded by Horace Greeley in 1841; it merged into the Herald Tribune in 1924. Its run was digitised by the Library of Congress's Chronicling America programme, from which this page is restored.

What the print shows

The full broadsheet page: the masthead, the seven-column headline, the first wire reports and lists of names, and the paper's first sketches of the ship and her survivors in the lifeboats. The typography and column rules are the paper's own; the restoration cleaned the scan and evened the tone of the newsprint without altering the text. The page sits on a narrow tinted mat within the paper size.

16 by 24 inches is the largest size at which the scan prints at full 300 DPI, so no larger size is offered.
