History

Repin, then a student at the Imperial Academy of Arts, saw a gang of burlaki on the Neva in 1868 and spent two summers on the Volga near Samara drawing the haulers themselves, giving each figure in the finished painting a known model: a defrocked priest, a soldier, a former icon painter, and the boy in the middle who straightens his harness as if to throw it off.

Shown in 1873, the picture was bought by Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich, won a medal at the Vienna world exhibition, and was taken up by critics as a statement about labour and the Russian people. Dostoevsky praised it precisely for not preaching. It entered the Russian Museum from the imperial collection and is one of the best-known Russian paintings of the 19th century.

What the print shows

A line of eleven men in harness leaning into the tow rope on a bright sandy bank, the barge with its furled sail behind them and a steamboat small on the horizon. The figures are individually drawn, from the bearded leader at the front to the exhausted man at the back; the young hauler in a pink shirt at the centre looks out of the line. The original is a very wide canvas, 131.5 by 281 cm; the print keeps that panoramic proportion.

Frequently asked questions

Who were the burlaki?
Hired labourers who towed boats upstream on Russian rivers by hand before steam tugs replaced them. Repin drew real haulers on the Volga for each figure.
Where is Barge Haulers on the Volga?
In the State Russian Museum in Saint Petersburg, which holds it from the former imperial collection.
What is the painting about?
Repin showed the haulers as individuals rather than as a symbol; contemporaries read it as a comment on labour and dignity in Russia, though the painter avoided an explicit message.
What shape is the print?
A wide panorama in the painting's proportions, offered as an A4 poster (listed as 8 by 12) and 12 by 18 inches, unframed or framed.
