Renoir, Luncheon of the Boating Party

Luncheon of the Boating Party (Le Déjeuner des canotiers) is Pierre-Auguste Renoir's oil painting of his friends at the end of a meal on the balcony of the Maison Fournaise restaurant on the Seine at Chatou, painted in 1880–1881 and held by The Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C. Renoir died in 1919 and the painting is in the public domain.

History

Renoir painted it over the summer and autumn of 1880 on the terrace of the Fournaise, a riverside inn popular with rowers and day-trippers west of Paris, posing friends and models in sessions whenever he could get them together. Among them are Aline Charigot, the seamstress he later married, holding a small dog at lower left; the painter Gustave Caillebotte in a straw boater at lower right; the inn-keeper's son and daughter; and journalists, actresses and collectors from his circle.

It was shown at the seventh Impressionist exhibition in 1882 and praised even by critics hostile to the movement. Duncan Phillips bought it in 1923 for his new museum in Washington, where it has been the centrepiece ever since.

What the print shows

Fourteen figures around the remains of lunch under a striped awning, with bottles and fruit on the white cloth, the river and sailboats glimpsed through the railing, and dappled light over everything. The composition moves from the pair at the left through the table to the leaning group at the right. The original is 130.2 by 175.6 cm; the print keeps that proportion and is offered up to 24 by 36 inches.
