Ibogaine molecule structure print
This design is the skeletal structure of ibogaine (C20H26N2O), an indole alkaloid found in the root bark of the West African shrub Tabernanthe iboga, drawn as a line diagram with its name and formula on a cream ground. The compound was first isolated in 1901 and its full structure was worked out in the 1950s.
History
The iboga shrub has been used in the Bwiti ceremonies of Gabon for generations, and French colonial scientists described the plant in the 1880s. Ibogaine itself was isolated and named in 1901 by Dybowski and Landrin, and independently by Haller and Heckel, from the root bark. Its structure, a complex fused indole with a seven-membered ring, was established in the late 1950s, and Büchi's group completed the first total synthesis in 1966.
Since the 1960s it has been the subject of continuing laboratory and clinical research, and it is a regulated substance in many countries. This page describes the molecule and the artwork only; it is not medical information.
What the print shows
The standard skeletal formula: the indole ring system fused to the isoquinuclidine cage, the methoxy group (OCH3) on the aromatic ring, the ethyl side chain and the two nitrogen atoms, drawn with wedge bonds for the stereocentres. Below it the name IBOGAINE and the formula C20H26N2O in letter-spaced type on a warm cream ground.
The poster is a vertical 2 : 3 composition rendered at full 300 DPI for the largest size, 24 by 36 inches. The same design is printed on a unisex tee.

Frequently asked questions
- What is ibogaine?
- An indole alkaloid, C20H26N2O, found mainly in the root bark of Tabernanthe iboga, a shrub of Gabon and neighbouring countries. It was isolated in 1901.
- Who discovered ibogaine?
- It was isolated from iboga root bark in 1901 by the French chemists Dybowski and Landrin, with Haller and Heckel reporting it the same year. The structure was settled in the late 1950s.
- Is this print medical advice?
- No. It is a decorative, accurate drawing of the molecule's structure, as recorded in PubChem, with its name and formula.
- Which formats are available?
- An unframed poster or a framed print in 8 by 12, 12 by 18, 16 by 24 and 24 by 36 inches, and a printed unisex tee. Prices are listed on this page.
